Karsun Solutions President Terry Miller joins John Gilroy and the Federal Tech Podcast to share how a product mindset combined with Karsun’s Digital Transformation toolkits enable agencies to meet their mission while meeting the expectations of its users.

The Product Mindset

In the interview, Miller describes how legacy application modernization can get bogged down by a focus on adding functionality over a focus on the product as a whole. He notes by taking a product mindset, technology teams instead consider the purpose of the product and what it is supposed to do for its users. This goes beyond adding features or modernizing to meet new requirements. Instead, product mindset oriented modernization considers the long-term vision for the product. It involves stakeholders from the beginning to ensure their vision is part of the collective vision. This includes adopting feedback loops, like those used in human centered design, to ensure consistent input from the beginning.

Toolkits Accelerate Transformation

Miller explained the second part of Karsun’s approach to design at scale is its Digital Transformation Toolkits. These resources and playbooks accelerate transformation as Karsun begins its modernization process. For example, the Digital Transformation Design Toolkit uses a system of 40 different components enabling our developers to quickly create U.S. Web Design System (USWDS) standards compliant interfaces. This allows rapid interaction from prototype to production while engaging the frequent feedback cycle needed for product mindset development. The news follows a series of contract wins. This includes the GSA Fleet Modernization Contract with a ceiling value of $75 million and the GSA Enhanced Checkout (GECO) Modernization under the COMET BPA.

Now with more than a decade in operation, Karsun is rapidly scaling to meet its explosive growth. This includes new awards of over $278 million within 2020 resulting from both new wins and organic contract growth.

Karsun’s Innovation and Growth teams also evolved throughout 2020. In addition to its in-house research and development team, the Innovation Center expanded to include five employee-centered practice areas.

Prior to joining private industry, he served as the Associate Director of Intergovernmental Affairs at The White House. In this capacity, he was the liaison between the President and state and local government elected officials.

He was also the 2019 Industry Chair of the American Council for Technology-Industry Advisory Council’s (ACT-IAC) highly regarded Partners Program, a training and professional development curriculum that pairs “rising star” leaders from government and industry.  New under Miller’s leadership, the group formed three challenge teams to provide direct solutions to government agencies (GSA, NASA, SBA). He is also a graduate of the Partners Program and was the Chair of the Management of Change (MOC) event in 2013.

Miller is the second Karsun Solutions executive named to the prestigious list. In 2015, Co-Founder and Chief Architect Kartik Mecheri was honored. At that time, Mecheri was recognized for support to the General Services Administration’s agile delivery teams and innovation lab 18F. He and his team created a robust repository of proven, free code for this and other federal agencies.

Terry Miller ACT-IAC 2019 Partners ChairTerry Miller, Chief Operating Officer at Karsun Solutions, will serve as Industry Chair of the American Council for Technology and Industry Advisory Council’s (ACT-IAC) 2019 Partners Program.
